Garnet Haifleigh
Garnet Opal (House) Haifleigh passed away on June 24, 2008 at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Mo., at the age of 95.5 years. She was proud to have her own teeth, no eyeglasses and no hearing aid during her lifetime. Garnet is survived by her loving family, many of whom attended her the past month. These members include her four daughters and their spouses or partners, Ellen Johnson and Bill Hayaski, Puyallup, Wash., Margaret and Jerry O'Leary, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Vivian and Bob Trumbauer, Omaha, Neb., and Debra and Dave Lund, Wichita, Kans. She is also survived by her grandchildren and spouses or partners, Chris and Gary Brown, Rich Day and David Warren, Jan Kohl and Woody Owen, Kelly and Marc Osborne, Lori and Tom Kelly, Brian and Gloria Trumbauer, Brenda Rouse, Jenny and Matt Callahan, Mike and Tamara Wright, Michelle Wright and Todd Cropper, Nicole and Jordan Lund. She also leaves behind 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Clarence Hafleigh, a daughter, Sandie Wright, and a grandson, David Day, and her six siblings. Garnet was born December 16th, 1912 in Helvey, Neb., the fifth of seven children of Elbert and Grace (Renner) House. She married Floyd Clarence Haifleigh on August 12, 1933. She and Floyd raised five daughters while Floyd worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad Line and Garnet instilled in them a love of music that lasts to this day. She gave piano lessons for many years, teaching several generations, was a member of the Silver Hair Legislature of Kansas, chaired the committee to build the Senior Center in Goodland and still found time for her quilting. After Floyd retired he and Garnet moved to Goodland, Kans., where many of her family lived. She lived there until 2006 when she moved to Independent Living in Excelsior Springs, Mo. She relished the many friends she made during her time here and commented often in her final month about the many dear people who stopped to visit her. A visitation will be held at Polley Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs, Mo., on Thursday, June 26, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Goodland United Methodist Church in Goodland, Kans., on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 3 p.m. with visitation one hour prior at the church. Burial will be in the Goodland Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Excelsior Springs at a later date. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Excelsior Springs or Goodland, Kans., or wherever you choose.
